✨ Storytime: The Return of the Starbound

Come closer, darling.

This is one of those stories people insist is only a legend.

Which, in my experience, usually means someone worked very hard to make everyone forget it.

The tale of the Starbound was long dismissed as moonlit nonsense. The sort of story romantics whispered beside campfires while sipping rosehip tea and making promises the stars never intended to keep.

But Solorathis...

She remembers everything.

And on the thirteenth turning of the Eclipse Moon, the stars blinked.

Deep within the Grove of Echoed Myths, silver nightlilies bloomed against every law of season and sense. The Eldertrees stirred in their ancient sleep, their branches murmuring in a language no living scholar could fully translate.

The Seers fell silent.

Then, almost together, they whispered a single name.

Aralithe.

Everyone expected the Starbound Queen to return.

She did not.

Not at first.

Instead...

Kaelen came home.

Or at least...

that is what everyone believed.

He stepped from a shimmering rift beside the Inkbound Library as though he had merely wandered away for an afternoon instead of disappearing between worlds.

He looked older.

Quieter.

His eyes still carried rivers of ink, but now they held shadows that had never lived there before.

His voice remained the same velvet thunder that once made kingdoms listen.

He remembered the old forests.

The Elven songs.

Her.

Yet something felt... wrong.

You see, darling, love powerful enough to cross realms rarely returns untouched.

When fate is torn open, it leaves cracks.

And cracks invite visitors.

Somewhere between worlds...

something crossed with him.

At first, no one noticed.

Kaelen avoided firelight.

He lingered in darkness.

He flinched whenever starlight touched his face.

While he slept, he whispered in a language that belonged neither to elves nor mortals.

The words sounded ancient.

Older than kingdoms.

Older than gods.

His heart still belonged to Aralithe.

That much was true.

But something else had curled itself around that heart.

Patient.

Silent.

Waiting.

An ancient shadow.

One whose name had long since been erased.

One that remembered only pain.

Then...

Aralithe returned.

Barefoot beneath a silver sky, she crossed the mist as though the moon itself had shaped her from light. Every flower turned toward her. Every breeze seemed to recognize her name.

When Kaelen saw her...

he smiled.

And somewhere deep inside him...

the shadow smiled too.

For a little while, the world remembered happiness.

The Starbound stood together once more.

There was laughter.

There were tears.

There were promises whispered beneath constellations that had waited lifetimes to witness their reunion.

The heavens themselves celebrated.

Or so the poets insist.

Then the dreams began.

Aralithe saw herself standing in burning forests.

She watched kingdoms crumble into ash.

She heard her own voice crying Kaelen's name, not with love...

but with heartbreak.

Each vision ended the same way.

Kaelen would turn toward her.

His face unchanged.

His smile familiar.

Only...

his eyes no longer belonged to him.

The Starbound had fulfilled their vow.

They had found one another across impossible distances.

But fate, tricky little thing that she is, never grants miracles without collecting payment afterward.

So now the question waits.

Quietly.

Patiently.

Is Kaelen truly home?

Or did something else find its way back wearing the face of the man Aralithe loves?

Oh...

I'll tell you the rest another time.

Some stories deserve to steep like good tea.

And this one...

This one may break your heart before it finally heals it.

Yours with stardust, secrets, and entirely too much tea,

Alice, Queen of Ink & Lore ☕✨

✒ Pip's Editorial Note

From Alice's Mad Tea Party

Alice neglected to mention that the Starbound legend exists in no fewer than seventeen surviving versions, none of which can agree on the precise order of events.

Some accounts claim Aralithe returned first.

Others insist Kaelen emerged alone.

A handful argue neither ever truly left, and that the entire legend is an allegory for memory, grief, and the way love changes those who survive it.

As for the "shadow," references to an unnamed ancient presence appear in several fragmented manuscripts recovered from Solorathis, though whether it represents a literal entity, lingering corruption, or the emotional scars of crossing realms remains a matter of scholarly debate.

One final observation.

Alice has a habit of ending these stories just before the answers arrive.

She calls it "building suspense."

The rest of us call it "refusing to turn the page."

Still...

Some legends are meant to unfold slowly.

Even I can admit that.

P.S. I asked Alice if she had the next chapter.

She smiled.

I dislike it when she smiles like that.
